North of London | Probably 'dry' when dug but ground water level was above the bottom and filled in after.
Lots of old wells did not produce very much water but they did not use large amounts do the well kept up to their needs most of the time.
I do remember a man my father's age telling us about digging a well where he was born and raised.
They came to a layer of hard blue clay near the end of a day. Don't remember how deep it was
Poked a hole through it with a bar and when they returned the next day the bar was under water and well kept them serviced with water after that. | |
