North of London | Saw that story the other day.
He was a lucky man.
Sounded like he knew it was there and had tried filling it but top caved in when he walked on it.
I wonder how many old dug wells are around that have been forgotten.
I have filled a number through the years including out in the middle of fields when what ever was placed on their tops gave way.
Latest was only about a metre deep and showed up in spring when cultivating it had fallen in over the winter but did find one on top of hill half way to back of farm when I was packing stones down in after planting soys.
Saw a patch in ground when I went past the next trip and walked over to investigate.
Hole and dropped a stone in to hear a splash.
Returned and dropped a line in, 20 feet deep and 8 foot of water.
Stone walls and must have been capped with stone for many years.
There was a house near the site probably a hundred years before as I had filled the stone filled basement with soil a few years before so I could work right through not around.
Waiting to see where the next one 'pops up' | |
