Southeast Colorado | I can't help but think my area is an outlier when it comes to producing without insurance (so it may not be worthy of a national discussion). One or two good hiccups and folks would start leaving the seed in the bag. As it is..........we cut 100 bpa dryland corn one year and then go a couple not even needing a combine.
The irrigated ground could keep growing grain crops. But even the irrigated isn't all created equal. Lots of circles with low gpm wells struggle to grow corn. The dryland is a different deal altogether. And I happen to think that 'grass fed" beef is a niche. Most folks expect a well marbled grain fed steak on their plate.
So take away the grain..............and we'd have to be more of a stocker and calf raising outfit. Then they'd need to either go somewhere else to be finished..........or start importing corn like the TX Panhandle does. It would certainly change the dynamics in that regard.
