| Sams Club is laying off 11,000 employees, and closing 10 stores.
I thought the mass layoffs were over?
Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s warehouse club chain Sam's Club will lose 11,200 jobs as an independent marketing firm takes over in-store demonstrations and business membership recruiting jobs are eliminated, Wal-Mart announced over the weekend.
Outsourcing demos to Rogers, Ark.-based Shopper Events, a firm that already oversees in-store demos at many Wal-Mart Supercenters, accounts for about 10,000 of the jobs. Most of those jobs are part-time, Wal-Mart said.
Sam's Club has struggled with profit margins as well as competing with other warehouse stores such as Costco. Earlier this month, Wal-Mart announced the closure of some Sam's locations. (See Wal-Mart to close 10 Sam's Club stores, Meatingplace, Jan. 13, 2010.) | |
