My understanding is this.  If I sold an option for 25 cents.  The money (.25) stays in my account.  If the market moves more than 25 cents against my position I will have to come up with more money.  Meaning that the option is now trading for something like 40 cents, I need to come up with 15 cents x 5000 = $750.      40 - 25 = 15
