In June 1972, soybean futures hit $12/bu. Japan was still buying from us, but we (US gov't?) told them we could not sell any more because we had to assure the supply to our own people. At that point, Japan went to SA to invest in a new area that could raise soybeans so they would have better assurance of soybeans that could be sold no matter the price. It took 20+ years for SA to raise as many soys as the US, but now they do. The increasing acres in SA over the last 30 years kept the trading range in the $5-$8 range (with some outside the range weather scares).
