Madison Co. Virginia | My holding pen and return lane(occupying half of a 1940's tiestall barn) are swarming with them this year. Based on the amount of busyness, I suspect my previous record of 14 active nests at once is going to be broken this year. They typically show up within a week on either side of April first. This year, the first ones showed up on my birthday, March 27.
A lot of them are using nests built on the mud dauber nests on the beams; those seem to be secure enough. But others are beginning to build on the light fixtures. Those are precarious, and I've had some issues with the nests falling. I need to install J-hooks in the ceiling for them to build off of.
And yes, maintaining a barn swallow population is written into my FARM plan(required for most US dairy farms) under the pest and insect management section! | |
