| Update.
You were all correct in your advice and assessments. Took too long with lots of choice words. Used a lot of penetrating oil and moving around.
The only other thing I did that helped was I used a punch to lightly tap around the fitting were the snap ring sat. Every time I tapped and sprayed oil, rust would work its way out. Once it started to move it became easier and easier to rotate and pull it out.
I am glad I did. There was a lot of junk on the screen and in the reservoir. Ended up flushing the reservoir too which brought out all the junk. Fortunately I am not finding metal, just organic debris.
