1936 was in a time of the solar cycle ramping up in a time of a generally active Sun. , and also, I think, in a positive phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. This time, we are in a negative phase of the PDO, Sun that seems to be sinking into a "mauder minimum" sort of state, with an El Nino that has pretty much already fizzled, and will definately fizzle by the summer. I don't think next summer will look much like the 30's. I'd bet more like the early 70's, or maybe the mid 40's. But, even the mid 40's(which were cooler) were in a period of a generally more active sun.
