Knowing what extenders you are using would be helpful.  I've installed a few of them and I do recall on both of them the instructions were very explicit about having vertical separation between the receiving and transmitting antennas.  20' was preferred if I recall correctly.  In my shop I have an older Wilson model.  The receiving antenna is about 15' higher than the ceiling mounted transmitter and it works well.
