Subject: RE: Battery disconnects

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I believe the OP may be referring to installing a battery disconnect on a tractor or truck to prevent the battery from being drained during long periods of nonuse.

My Deere 9770 combine came with one mounted on the battery box. My Deere 8310R has one mounted under the cab above the top step. I found one that is the same style that was on the tractor and installed it in the battery box of my grain truck. This is the style that has a bent rod that acts as a crude key. This rod is moved to change the status of the switch. The rod could be removed if desired. It comes with a short chain, so I usually remove it and let it dangle on the chain while the truck is parked in the shed. As I approach the truck I can glance at the area of the disconnect to decide if I need to install and turn it to ON before crawling into the truck.

Here's what I have used:

They have several. Scroll down to Item #4417 for the style I used.

I moved all grounds from the batteries to the truck frame. I ran all negative terminals of the batteries to the new switch. I had to purchase a short but heavy duty cable to go from the new switch to the truck frame. With the switch OFF, the negative or ground terminals are disconnected. This does mean that the clock in the radio and presets are incorrect for the next use.

Generally these disconnects are installed in the ground path although the factory battery disconnect on my older Hagie sprayer is in the "hot" side.

As far as a removable disconnect for a battery source to a sprayer or the like, I have used the Anderson connectors. They are a clever design and both ends are the "same" due to the design of the plastic shells they can only be plugged together one way. They come in a variety of colors and sizes.
