Subject: fat and salt for constipation

Pittsburg, Kansas
Some people have that problem, or the opposite problem, when starting. It usually passes after a couple weeks and the body gets used to the new agenda.

One doctor, I think it was Cywes, says constipation is a sign of not enough fat. Many people think of eating meat as lean is better because we have been scared of saturated fat for so many years. But once you cut out most carbs, an energy source, another energy source is needed. Lean meat is a poor energy source. The body can make it into energy but it is an inefficient process. Fat is a good energy source, so ideally as the carbs go out of the diet it is replaced with fats.

Here is where the rub comes in. If you eat enough dietary fat the body does not have to reach into the energy stores for fat for energy. So if a person is trying to lose weight, fat weight, you really want the energy coming from body fat instead of dietary fat. So a person might purposely not want to be eating enough fat energy to fully supply body needs.

But a person may need to in the beginning, up the fat intake somewhat.

Also a shortage of salt will cause constipation. And often when a person goes low carb all the boxed processed food goes out of the diet because it is almost always high carb. That boxed food, most of it, contains a lot of salt. So a person can suddenly be on a low salt diet when going low carb without even realizing it. So a person may need to get used to using the salt shaker again. Unless a person has a medical condition where it is not a good idea, a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water will do wonders for constipation.
