Fruita CO | I have a trauma about pipes in the attic...when we moved into this house it was in May, the people had moved out a few months before. The previous owner showed me the connection to the 1/4" copper line for the swamp cooler, said he had blown it out in the fall...it was getting hot in the house while we were moving stuff in, so I hooked up the line & started the cooler, everything seemed to be working. Got moved in & went to sleep for the FIRST NIGHT in our new home...about 3 AM I woke up hearing a kind of popping sound. I started down the hall & was met by a BIG thud & a cloud of insulation dust coming down the hall at me...12 feet of the living room ceiling came down, with about a ton of wet insulation. The cooler line had not been blown out good, froze & split in the attic. Not good...my wife had slipped on the ladder going into the semi trailer we used to move & hurt her leg the day before,,,she was laying on the couch among the insulation & sheet rock crying..."I don't want to live in this house!"
Fingers were pointed & words exchanged, & the guy finally conceded that he hadn't made sure the line was blown out good. We had closed on our old house & had to be out so were were actually renting this house for a month until we could close on it, so fortunately their insurance paid for the repairs.
The house has 2 water heaters, so I ran the new line from the bathroom heater straight up the stack, out onto the roof & across to the cooler, NOT in the attic...
Once the ceiling was fixed, my wife loved the house & lived the rest of her life in it. | |
