Funny, the other side of that argument is the house is probably not worth what it would cost a good contractor to do the work. Get a good contractor to put up an addition, which is just a new house that happens to sit next to the old one and use it's utilities. Get a hungry guy to do something like dig out a basement and block it up as he goes.
