East of Broken Bow | Status symbol might not be the right term, but I know plenty of people who would work a lot harder, if they were just a little bit lacking. I don't mean going hungry, but rather lacking some luxuries.
I can think of one guy off the top of my head, who works part time. Lives in assisted housing, pays under $20 a month for a heated, air conditioned apartment with free laundry and Wi-Fi. Once, a while back, he wanted to go on a vacation, so took on more hours (from the usual 40is hours a month he was working). Well, after about a month of this, he went back to his lower hours. Turns out that when he made more money, his rent went up, his food assistance went down, etc, etc, to the point that he was only making like $2-$3 an hour for the extra hours he was working. Instead he started mowing a few lawns for cash, and had more in his pocket in an afternoon, than he did from working the extra hours each week. | |
