Subject: Fuel tank problem - JD LX279 mower

I have a JD LX279 mower. Long story short, I have a elderly neighbor that mows my yard for something to do. I suspect he put some old gas or contaminated gas in my mower. I have had fuel filter and carb troubles for the past yr. I tore the mower down to the gas tank and poured a bunch of gunk out of the tank. The tank has a residue left in the tank that gas will not dissolve. The tank is molded plastic that is molded to fit in every crook and cranny under the seat and sheet metal - meaning it is not condusive to cleaning out with a power washer. Any ideas on something stronger than gas that I can put in the fuel tank that would cut the rest of this gunk out of it but not harm the plastic tank.

Thanks in advance

Tom
