Subject: Sweetcorn Suckers

Macon, IL
Sweetcorn SuckersThis is my first year with about 1/4 acre of sweetcorn. Almost evey plant has 2-3 "suckers" on the bottom. Not sure the real name but just like suckers on a tree-basically another stalk growing from the base. I am sure it is not a double as I dug them and can only find 1 kernel. I guess I have a couple questions:

1) I assume they should come off correct? If I twist them they seem to break off pretty easily-or will this harm the plant? If I do it I think I can get them all in 1 long day. BTW: Corn is just now starting to tassle-I probably should have done this long ago but that is where I am at now.

2) Does all sweetcorn do this or did I just have back luck with this variety?
