N. IL | We drilled 3 acres of oats after soybean harvest last fall (N. Illinois). They grew to about 3" tall by December. Normally oats won't overwinter and are gone in the spring.
We had 2 weeks of snow and deep cold, but they are still alive and now growing. Burndown will be simple but am surprised how they survived. We had plenty of cold well below freezing after the snow melted in February. I did put on anhydrous through them in November so it's not a solid stand.
These are the only cover crops that we have, oats seem to work well generally in this area since they almost always die over the winter. | |
