Subject: Gypsum as soil ammendmant?

I know this has been hashed over many times over the years. Not everyone is on the same page. My question to users that have applied gypsum to high Mag soils, what has it done?
I have a few grids where the Mag % is in the 22-24% range. This is on a field that can get rock hard in wet springs when worked too soon. Water infiltration and erosion can be bad in wet heavy rainfall years.
I would like to spread gypsum on a few acres too see what it does. My agronomist says I won't be able to afford that. Is the high sulfur rate in gypsum too much for the first year or so? Does it actually mellow and loosen the soil. Some of these areas are on hillsides and upper ground, so drainage shouldn't be an issue. I am in central MN. I have read about guys in Ohio, Indianna that says it works. Soil type and climate are different than what I have.
