Subject: growing sunflowers in Iowa

Scranton
The DNR has us growing sunflowers in rotation on some of their ground. This is for morning dove hunting, so they like to have it pretty grass free as the birds like to see dirt. They mow half the fields off in late august to draw the birds in.

How deep should we plant them. What is a slightly thin population (dnr wants bigger heads) to plant them? How much Nitrogen do they need? Is there a decent yet reasonably priced seed available somewhere? Probably 50 acres per year.
