| Did a little wheat scouting today. Hard to believe we were buried in 2 foot of snow a month ago. Even with all that snow a large % of the field was still bare when we got the -20 degree arctic blast.
Is this variability between the green and the brown areas mostly cosmetic? My main concern is it screwing up the timing of heading between the different areas. Hoping for uniform heading for the scab fungicide.
My stand counts probably show a bit more variability than there really is. The top count was taken in the last few acres seeded where the seeding rate was upped a bit for a trial. 2nd count was taken in one of the best looking areas. #3 and #4 were taken in the toughest looking area I could find. For most of the field the target seeding rate was 1.5 mil/acre. I think it got on a touch light, but not bad. Seeded September 28th in Northeast Nebraska. There is little to no wheat grown here, and this is my first attempt. Any advice is welcome.
Bonus question: What are these red things I dug up? Reminds me of gall midge. Is this how they overwinter?
