Subject: Drive belts how hot can they take

East Central Arkansas

This is in a lawnmower application. Gates bladerunner belt. Back some time ago I had posted about having trouble with the belt breaking on our JD X300 with the 42" deck. It's a bad design for belt life anyway. It uses only the one belt from the  engine to the blades. Someone mentioned they had ended up changing the electric mower clutch and that fixed there belt problem. That pulley gets extremely hot. The thing uses too small of a belt. It's only a 1/2" belt and it's 146" long. To top that off the design doesn't allow it to run straight with the pulleys. I just ordered a new clutch from this place to see if it might help. PTO Clutch For John Deere X300 Series  I can't stand to keep buying belts. I mowed for awhile this afternoon and when I shut the mower down I reached under and felt of that pulley. Hot enough it would have burned you pretty fast. My thinking is you shut it down and that belt just cooks setting in one spot on that pulley.
