Subject: sunflower dessication

Rivers, MB
This is our 3rd year growing sunflowers (oils) but don't have much experience with sraying them with a dessicant. What stage is best for spraying with Reglone. Anyone dessicating their sunflowers with glyphosate. What stage do you spray them with glyphosate? I've been told that with reglone, the head loses its water repellancy and that the heads can absorb alot of water if you get into a rainy spell. Is that a concern. Last year we sprayed half of the sunflowers with reglone and let the other half ripen naturally (didn't have a hard frost till late Sept.) and they were both ready about the same time. We did have a week of rain just about when the reglone side was just about ready to harvest but it seemed odd to me that the non-sprayed part after the rain was just as dry as the sprayed part. I wonder if we sprayed too late. The way I remember it, we sprayed when the bracts were all brown and crispy. Any advice to offer??
