My steers are finally getting with the program and grazing the corn aggressively now that winter weather has finally arrived. A couple steers were right along the wire behind the house this morning in 10 degree (F) weather and I snapped a few pictures. These are March and April 2011 calves. This year's steers seem to be eating the cobs and all like most previous years' groups. Last year for some reason the steers would usually shell the corn in their mouths then spit out the cob. This year they are eating the whole cob again. As I watched they would also eat some husks and upper stalk, but mostly ears. The cold and wind didn't seem to bother them as they focused on the corn. I'm not sure which steers these are in the picture but most of them weighed around 800 lb a couple weeks ago when last across the scale. FWIW. Jim at Dawn
