SE SD | I am selling calves on Monday. I normally keep 6-7 replacements back, 10% of herd. With these prices I’m tempted to sell them all and maybe buy some replacements next winter. We don’t have a closed herd; have bought small groups of heifers in the past.
We calve in May so would be keeping these to breed in late summer. I’ve done it this way for 15 yrs. Hard to break old habits
They should bring $800 +$425 in feed and vet costs to retain. That would give me $1,225 to replace them.
I would be guaranteed a bred heifer and no risk of death loss now until then.
What to do, that is the question?
