Subject: Sudangrass, Millet,,,, what??

I've been asked to plant a one season forage crop. Hay only, no chance of grazing. I'm prepping, seeding and harvesting. They pay me for the work and keep the hay. They want hay that will be acceptable for wintering beef cows.

We already determined that whatever we do, it's a one shot deal at this point of the year.

Anyway, I have some experience with sorghum/sudan as a emergency hay crop, but there seem to be more choices now. I ran across some info on a BMR sudangrass that sounds interesting. However, my seed wholesaler claims that it will never cure for hay. He recommended millet. All I know of millet is that it's a finer stem than sudangrass, but likes it's moisture. I'm going to plant this on some ground that runs from sand to dark sand.

Any thoughts, especially on the BMR sudangrass??

Thanks!

Dave
