Subject: Is it time?

central Kentucky
I have a registered Polled Hereford herd of about 40 cows. I raise bulls that I sell to local commercial guys. My price for bulls is typically $1200 to $1500. I sell a few registered heifers, but mostly keep the best for my own replacements. My cows are pretty good, but are a pretty mixed up group as far as bloodlines go. I have bought a couple here and there at purebred sales to get to my number. We were very dry here last year and hay is still selling for $50 plus for a 5 x 5 round bale of pretty much anything that looks like hay. I am considering selling off the biggest part of these cows and only keeping the ones that are three years old and younger to start over with. Do you think the registered sales will be down this fall and next spring? I went to a couple of sales this spring and was shocked to see how high these cattle were with the price of grain and hay. Is now an opportunity to get better genetics at discount prices?
