Subject: Calves on yard grass.

Ellsworth IL
A suburbanite buddy of mine had either a brainstorm or a brainfart and bought a holstein steer calf (350 pound range) a few weeks ago. he's got it staked out in his 5 acre yard, moving the stake every few days. He's supplementing with about a pound coffee can of Farm and Fleets' cheapest 18% protein daily.
His winter time plan is to stockpile grass clippings from his yard and feed this . He doesn't "need" hay, corn etc. just a little bagged supplement.

I'm thinking at worst he's going to kill the calf and at best it's never going to truly finish out and be the worst piece of meat in the county.

So, am I all wet in telling him to get some decent alfalfa hay and some ground ear corn, or is his plan workable?
