Good article...

Is the food customer always right?

It’s one of the rock-solid axioms of business – the customer is always right. But as I logged tractor time planting and spraying this season’s crops, the news on the radio and on various podcasts I’ve selected has me wondering if this is true, especially when I hear some of the sound bites from food consumers and advocates.

Consider the messages farmers receive from the so-called “foodie” element - the affluent, urban food buyer who looks upon the bounty provided by progressive agriculture with disdain. This customer has been telling us that they want non-genetically modified, heritage variety, free-range organic food produced within 100 miles of their doorstep, preferably by farmers wearing straw hats, Birkenstocks and singing Kumbaya. They say they don’t care what it costs (yeah, right!). They want their food to reflect the food trend of the day. Well, yes, we can do that if the price is right.....
