Subject: Bed pack/ composted bed pack vs. small sand free stalls

Thompsontown, Pennsylvania
right now we are bedding clay bottom freestalls with sand......definately an improvement over old hay and straw....barn was built in 1968 and stalls are 1968 era stalls.....too short and neck rails too low......even with re hanging new freestalls and putting kickwalls on and such to lengthen stall beds the stalls will still not be perfect as the barn was built with trusses on 5ft. centers and posts on 7.5 ft centers....thus freestalls on 4 ft. centers end up with a post in the middle every so often....am kicking around just ripping everything out and going bedpack....either a old time bed every day or a composter bed pack...am concerned with only having 10 ft. sidewalls, i can't get a deep enough pack to effectively get it to compost........thought and opinions are appreciatted.........TIA Kyle
