Just put a new transformer and hard drive in a ten year old computer for $500. My wife said I should have bought a new one. I told her I essentially did.
Without knowing the specifics of the rest of your machine or to the extent of what data was contained or able to be saved, it's a hard call for me. Sometimes the ability to keep the current machine is more valuable to the user himself than starting new. I'm a PC guy with a Computer Science degree running a self built 10yr old omputer I even do a decent amount of gaming on. For games, the processor is getting its age on it. But for general bookkeeping, I'll keep it ticking. Hell I've got an XP box that was refurbished when we bought it in 2001. Thing still works.
