Subject: RE: 4030 Deere Any Good?

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS
The 4030 was the smallest of the "30" series tractors that JD introduced in the early '70s with the Sound Guard cabs. Basically, as an earlier poster said, it was a replacement for the 3020. The engine had about 52 more cubic inches and it was rated about 3-5 more hp than the 3020. The "30" series was pto hp rated as follows: 4030 - 80 hp, 4230 - 100 hp, 4430 - 125 hp, 4630 - 150 hp. Of course, most owners "turned them up" a bit (some did a lot) just as soon as they could without voiding the warranty (some probably sooner than that). Just remember that you are getting a 40+ year old piece of machinery and plan accordingly. Also, as was stated earlier, the "40," "50," and later series will give you more hp and, in most cases, a "beefier" tractor.
