Manitoba, Canada | I don't know for sure but i had assumed that the nitrogen was held in a bladder to keep it separate. I think it would have to be to keep it from being absorbed into the oil and lost. As far as the advantages of having relatively large molecules i think the main advantage is that it doesn't absorb moisture.
Edit to add: reread your post and you probably meant less loss through the membrane between the oil and nitrogen much like loss through a tire.
