At all of our dealerships the machines are washed thoroughly before they come into the shop. This helps to keep down the dirt and dust while other jobs are going on in the service area that cleanliness is a must. We don’t see many bearing failures the following season or any other “water” related issues.
The key is clean as much as possible with air and then use high volume low-pressure water wherever you can. I will never be convinced that you can get the previous harvest grease and oil removed with only air. Leaving this residue on from year to year can’t be of any benefit either. What it all washes down to is a competent “water technician” on the end of the hose. While it doesn’t last long in the field the technician servicing your machine in the off-season will thank you. The quality of bearings and seals have improved greatly in the past few years but I doubt there are many out there that will stand up to high pressure for several minutes. Not to start a color war here but I have been associated with a few different manufacturers and some do have higher quality bearings than others. Air is still better than nothing at all.
