I can't remember the S/N break but the early 4430's were nothing much more than a 4520 with different sheet metal.

I'm guessing you meant 4020 there-a 4520 has enough iron in the assend to make 2 4430's...but yes, the original 4430 rear end was exactly a 4320, w/1.5" planetaries, which was, yes, same as a 4020... The later ones, don't remember the SN, had 51mm (2") finals. The old ones that trashed out got 51mm's in the mod program. Yes, there was a mod program-we tore the finals out of EVERY 4430 between 3-4K hrs, & they got checked for wear. Depending on how much wear the sun gear was showing, it either got new finals or switched side to side to wear the other side of the teeth. This was also where the lead-ball method of setting the preload came into use. The problem showed up when all the 44's came out cranking about 140 or 150 instead of 125, as advertised. They got weighted down to hold that HP, & tied onto bigger implements, & there went the finals, designed for 94 HP...JD's excuse was that the customer surveys told them they wanted to keep the same equipment & just pull it faster...yeah right..
