| An ammeter reads in AMPS, charging current and it can vary from nothing to 50 or 60 amps, or discharge to -50 or -60 amps with lots of lamp loads.
Is the panel meter really a voltmeter? Is its calibration good? Compared to your multimeter, how is it.? I greatly dislike having only a voltmeter, it gives misleading readings and very little useful information. I much prefer an ammeter that actually shows me charging and dicharging current to the battery. When the alternator has a bit more voltage than the battery, there's charging.
