It appears that the concensis is that the various legal "top ups" you see advertised on the net, like "Freeze 12" or stuff like that, mostly contain a mixture of propane and butane, while proper refrigerant is safe (i.e. nonflammable).

If you just need a bit of a top up, you likely have a small leak you don't feel is worth the trouble/cost of correcting. Think about how you/equipment will survive the fire/explosion if you use the quick solution.
