Get the stinkiest galvanized paint you can buy. The stinkier the better. Got some out of Ky, 5 gallon buckets and roll, it on, brush it on or blast it on. You will look like the tin man when you get done.

High pressure wash of all the dirt and grime, if you wire brush the rust, most don't but even better if you do.

I am not sure if they make a good primer for that situation. They do for colors but I don't think they do for galvanized, at least I never saw on. If you paint a color, wash it and prime it first.

If the nails are loose or rusty replace them, screws are better. Use a rubber grommet type screw like they use on roofing nails if you can find them, otherwise leave the ones you have if they are tight and are the right nail.
