Subject: RE: stalk stompers

Just went through an interesting incident this week with stalk stompers on a 893 head. Turned into a turn row and felt the right tire roll over something so next round stopped and looked. A stalk stomper laying on the ground all smashed up. Got to looking and the attachment point on the corn head is two holes through a cast iron plate mounted on the front of the gear case. The two holes broke out and folded the stomper under thus breaking the last of the attachment bolts. Four hours later and $400.00 for the front plate we got going again. The stalk stompers are off now. Terraces have to be the culprit plus I believe there is way too much spring tension on them. Now we do not what to do as you say tires are expensive but you can ruin them two ways with or without stalk stompers.
