| The mildew seems to be extremely combustible. I have seen the dust on the sides of the combine turning black and smoking without even being around the hot exhaust. It seems like the fan blowing through the engine compartment and dropping on the ground is how it usually starts the fields on fire. You can't even put it out with a shovel as you keep stirring it and flipping it farther on the ground and watch a black smoldering spot continue to grow. We use a disk or cultivator to stir the ground to get those out.
Luckily we didn't have any mildew problems this year. The Case IH in our area seem to be the worst with these fires but when mildew is bad they all start fires. | |
