| I contend that serious national discussion about voluntary conservation could cause fuel prices to plummet.
I'm able to use only the air in my drying bin to dry my corn. My operation is small enough that all my corn crop most years will fit in the bin; I run the air for several weeks. Worst case scenario I could always turn on the heat if necessary. My main tillage tractor is a 100 hp Belarus, and it's biggest, and sometimes only, redeeming social value is its fuel stinginess. My light soil conditions allow me to skip fall tillage on bean ground, and any corn ground that the neighbors bale the stalks from usually doesn't get tilled in fall. I realize this wouldn't work for everyone. All my grain is sold locally.
I try to buy more groceries and supplies closer to home, but we waste fuel making extra trips to town, after all it's only 2.6 miles. Coffee shop runs count up.
The challenge I would like to suggest is try to cut your petroleum use by 10-15% without significantly affecting your lifestyle and farming operation. Not only should it be good for fuel prices, it should also help the bottom line. | |
