| Looks to me like the reason for front drive in the Tank picture is to minimize the distance between top of track and tank frame. If you had a rear drive, the track would bounce and hit on top in the current configuration, requiring more space and more places to shoot anti tank things. Would also allow big nasty things like trees/fence/tank trap stuff to wedge between track and tank.
Total speculation on my part, but it is a thought.
