| I bought a Super 88 Oliver at a farm sale 35 miles northeast of where I live. The day of the sale was a Saturday in mid November, 1985, & we were just getting a real good blast of cold wind at the sale (30-40 mph WNW wind; 16 degrees was the high temperature that day. That evening, I went to a local Holiday gas station & bought a real warm stocking cap. The next day, a friend & I drove back to the sale site, dumped 10 gallons of gas in the tractor & I took off into the 30 mph; 12 degree WNW wind. It took 2 1/2 hours to drive home & another 20 minutes under a hot shower to warm up my extremities & insides. Earlier, in October of that year, I bought an Oliver 88 that was a running parts tractor & drove it 25 miles to my home & robbed some small things off it to finish restoration of my Oliver Super 77. I then sold it to my Dad for the same as I paid for it & drove it 105 miles one Saturday morning to deliver it to him. It had a badly burned valve & didn't sound the best, but I had a little extra spring tension on the governor spring & made the 105 mile trip in 5 hours. Since then I have driven tractors over a lot of the eastern half of Iowa on tractor rides. Dave Greif | |
