I'd have to strongly endorse John W's comments on this. Planters moved away from gauging depth from a trailing packer wheel back in the late '60s and early '70s. I'm sure there were naysayers at the time, but virtually all the manufacturers went to gauging depth alongside the opener blades in a relatively short time. Drills will go the same way. No-till soils really show the inadequacies of gauging from a packer/press wheel (which was marginal in tilled soils anyway). In a similar vein, all those openers will eventually separate the seed firming function from the closing. If enough producers ask for it, the manufacturers will respond. |
