Ryan We have several power sweeps, both newer & older. Ours are all DMC brand. The newer ones have a gear reduction INSIDE the drive wheel & a much larger drive wheel & screw assy. and obviously turn much slower. The newer ones w/gear reduction also go around the bin in clockwise motion-while older direct-drive models go around counter-clock-wise. None of the power sweeps will keep the 8" unload augers full, assuming middle cone has completely quit running. But-they will keep one man very busy scooping & sweeping while using 2 guys is preferrable (for us anyway). When it's 100 degrees inside bin-it's nice to have help. Then someone needs to keep eye on truck also. I doubt there are many new bins that go up anymore around here without power sweeps. Before filling bin, we position sweep just a few inches short (back side?) of the intermediate wells. The newer gear reduction sweeps will almost always (maybe always!) keep moving on their own. Sometimes the older hi-rpm power sweeps will get hung up on a piece of flashing or a floor sheet that's too high & they need a "kick" or a little lift with a scoop to allow them to move ahead again. Re. grain depth in Shivvers bin-I now keep it at about 3' & try & allow continuous flow drying. Seems to work good that way. The automatic shutoff is still functional at about 1.5' or wherever it's set. |
