TIG is to all intents and purposes strictly ARGON. There are mixes of Argon & Helium used, but judging from your question, you really aren't dealing with them.

A Dialarc is a usable TIG machine, and yes, the foot pedal is fairly mandetory, since it gives you variable control of amperage, just as the accelorator gives you variable speed in a vehicle. An experienced weldor can TIG without a foot control, but a beginner will drive himself nuts trying.
