WC Saskatchewan | I was going to stay out of this but, like Hop-a-long started to say, you cannot set the reel to do a proper job on a traditional flex head. For example a 900 series JD flex, can flex up to 4", a 600 series can flex up to 6", you cannot set the reel close enough to the knife to do any good, without cutting off your reel teeth. With a draper you can set your reel down as close to the knife as you like without cutting off teeth.
There are numerous other advantages, especially for guys running older combines, you have complete adjustability of cutterbar angle, header float, and the benifit of lateral tilt.
Macdon has an option on the 972 header for JD for sure others colors not sure. But it is the JD dial-a-matic box mounted on the adapter frame, which is then hooked to the header, that senses header movement and works equally well as any flex head with auto height control.
In my area( Sask) we cut some short crops, and myself, along with many of my neighbors, have proved you can do a better job with a draper (972, 974, or a honeybee) than a flex. You cannot compare a 960 Macdon because it was not built to cut close to the ground.
I personally have a 930flex and a 36' macdon960. Without a doubt I would go with a 972 or a 974 but the $$ holds me back. | |
