If it is the 3.9 v6 from dodge I would look to replace the hall effect switch. It is the triggering mechanism in the distributor. Remember with the dodge engine if you have intermittent spark or no spark with fuel injection you have no fuel.
Wife had a Dakota that made us get too much exercise because of that switch.
