Subject: Re: friends '86 pickup died

I'd say it sounds to me like a simple case of vapor lock. Is the pickup arbureted or fuel injected? I was always under the impression that fuel injection was immune to vapor lock but my '90 TBI GMC seemed to have a mild case of it on a hot day pulling the 20' gooseneck.

Maybe your friend could try wrapping or rerouting some of the fuel line away from hot engine components? I hate to say it but ethanol blended fuel is more prone to vapor lock on a hot day. I put 5 gal of E85 in with the E10 on my car the other day. Tomorrow I might top off with straight gasoline if it stays this hot. Your friend could also try adding a pint or so of motor oil or ATF to his fuel tank might "thicken" up the gas enough to solve the problem.
