Subject: Curvetine closing wheels + cast iron

Driftless SW Wisconsin
I would not recommend using a Curvetine on one side and a cast iron whell on the other - but we have a number of customers who do exactly that. The Curvetine will "chip in" the sidewall and give you good seed to soil contact without the squeezing and possible compaction caused by a tapered cast iron wheel in some especially wet soil conditions.

To minimize expense I would recommend ordering one Curvetine per row, (half RH + half LH) and put one per row on with your current cast wheels. On one outside end row put two Curvetines and on the other outside end leave two cast iron wheels. This way when you turn you will have two rows with your current setup for reference, two rows with two Curvetines and most rows with one Curvetine. Note the row with two Curvetines will require much less spring closing pressure.

This will give you a good evaluation of the performance of the Curvetine and also if it is worth putting two per row on. I think you will eventually end up with two per row.

If you have any of the original 12" OD rubber tire closing wheels around, it might be of interest to run one row with a rubber on one side and 13" OD Curvetine on the other to compare. Many customers have started with one Curvetine but eventually end up with two per row. They will work as well in tilled ground or as no till, you will need to adjust the spring pressure differently but that's about it.

Sorry for the delay in replying to your email. We had a computer mixup this week on the email side. I reply here only because this is somewhat of a general interest question.

By the way, good to see so many NAT folks at the MN strip till demos this week.
